Research & Development

RUSTIN relies on a highly skilled Research & Development department specializing in formulation, design, and innovation. We support our clients from needs analysis to production, developing sealing solutions that meet the most stringent requirements of industrial sectors.

High-Value Elastomers

Each sector has its own requirements for elastomers, depending on the final use of the product. While sealing against water, dust, and air is essential, it is not sufficient for applications in mobility (aerospace, railway, road transport, public transport) or for markets subject to very strict specifications.

Aware of our clients’ performance and innovation challenges, we design high-value rubber and silicone materials. Vibration or acoustic insulation, fire or impact resistance… Our expertise in formulation and mastery of production processes allow us to meet all your sealing requirements while complying with the most demanding standards.

Development and Qualification of Blends

RUSTIN develops and formulates specific rubber and silicone compounds in-house. This complete control over the value chain allows us to offer customized solutions in terms of hardness, chemical resistance, mechanical strength, aging, and more, tailored to your applications. Our laboratory qualifies rubber compounds according to the regulatory requirements of various industries, for example:

  • =EN 45545-2 for the European rail industry;
  • =NFPA 130 for the U.S. rail industry;
  • =FAR 25.853 for fire and smoke classification in aerospace;

Our expertise in fire and smoke classification is well recognized, and we regularly develop innovative formulations that meet these standards.

Functional Design and Part Engineering

Once the material is defined, our teams design the part with an optimized layout to ensure sealing or damping performance. Using our 3D design and simulation tools, we validate feasibility, anticipate production constraints, and optimize the geometry to guarantee performance and durability. Prototypes can be produced via 3D printing or waterjet cutting to quickly test the part’s behavior in its real environment.

Tooling Design

RUSTIN manages the development and manufacturing of the tooling required for extrusion or molding in-house. This expertise ensures tight control over lead times, optimal precision, and full adaptability in the event of iterations or improvements during the project.

End-to-End Support

We support our clients throughout the entire industrial process: understanding needs, formulating the blend, functional design, prototyping, testing, validation, and industrialization. This complete integration allows us to guarantee quality, responsiveness, and reliability—from the first exchange to the delivery of the final parts.

Continuous Innovation and High-Value Solutions

Always seeking improvement and innovation, our R&D teams regularly develop new
materials and part architectures: eco-friendly blends, high-performance silicones, fire-resistant solutions, translucent backlit products, or multi-material components to meet the evolving demands of mobility. Our ability to combine formulation, design, and production on a single site allows us to offer custom, reliable, highperformance, and certified solutions

Some examples of our rubber and silicone products:

  • =Seals (flat, cut, extruded, inflatable, molded)
  • =Profiles (compact, cellular, reinforced, bi-material…)
  • =Sheets, plates, rolls, wires, tubes, cords
  • =Molded, adhesive, or overmolded parts
  • =Rubber-metal, adhesive, or multi-material components

Within our in-house laboratory, our experts analyze your needs and design custom solutions: feasibility studies, formulation of specific blends (rubber or silicone), and selection of the most suitable materials.
Using our 3D design and simulation tools, we develop the geometry of your parts and produce prototypes (3D printing, waterjet cutting) to validate their performance before production.
Our internal mastery of tooling and manufacturing processes ensures responsiveness, precision, and quality at every stage, supported by rigorous controls for reliable and optimized production.
